The most frequently met white appeared to be not the cabbage white but the black-veined white. Latin name of the butterfly means ~“hopelessness of hawthorn”. Do you remember Zeno's aporias from the high school course of philosophy? This genus, Aporia, has the same name. But why? I haven't found an explanation; shall we make a context of googling or joking about that ;)?

Eg, I found a Greek mythology encyclopedia telling that APORIA was the spirit (daemon) of difficulty, perplexity, powerlessness and want of means. Probably, by tradition, the butterfly was called after a random Greek personality. Probably, entomologists had a special small book containing all names of Greek daemons, spirits, gods, goddesses, heroes, as well as simple mortals killed/tortured by all abovementioned.
