В природе <a target=_blank href=http://iplants.ru/vid-hipp-B.htm>гиппеаструм блоссфельда</a> обитает на песчаных грядах бразильского штата Сан-Паулу, под палящим солнцем; <a target=_blank href=http://iplants.ru/vid-hipp-R-Y.htm>полосатый (<em>vittatum</em>) — в лесах на скалистых склонах Перуанских Анд; красноватый (<em>striatum</em>) — во влажных, но тенистых лесах Южной Бразилии; а королевский (<em>reginae</em>) широко распространён в Южной Америке</a>, что, видимо, указывает на его способность приспосабливаться к различным условиям.</p><p>А теперь берём всю эту засухоустойчивость, неприхотливость к качеству почвы, теневыносливость и пластичность и…

The hippeastrum genus (~60–70 species) is native to elevated tropical and subtropical regions of South America (Atlantic Forest in Brazil + central southern Andes of Peru, Bolivia and Argentina). These “grandma's” hippeastrums which are almost impossible to kill — where do these monsters of hardiness come from?

So I found that most hippeastrums are various hybrids.

JohnsonsPhoto: Pop Up Gardens by Debbie Allbritton @ TypePadIt is acknowledged that the first hybrid hippeastrums was “Johnsonii” (1799) — tetraploid cross of Hippeastrum vittatum and Hippeastrum reginae. There are also other “grandma's” sorts — eg, Hippeastrum striatum, Hippeastrum blossfeldiae hybrids — which co-exist with people for so long that even experts will not guess there breed better than «looks very similar to».
