Jun 05, 2012: One of our tasks was to define age of the trees growing in the described plot. That was important bcs we want to know not only present situation but also it's dynamics — since when, how well the trees grow, or maybe they already die instead of growing.

Everybody knows that to define age of a tree you need to look at its annual rings. Usually you can see them after killing a tree. Killing trees is unpleasant and non-environmentally-friendly. Moreover, we had to define ages of each kind of trees in every landscape. It would be especially cynical to kill trees in a landscape having only one tree (and what should we write in the report? “There _was_ a tree of that age?”).

increment borerWikipediaThe botanists solve this problem using a Pressler borer (or increment borer). With help of a hollow borer they take a sort of a core what is core 3 mm wide with annual rings seen on it as stripes. The hole in the tree will later heal.

Annual rings show not only age. For years of fast growth the tree shows wide annual rings. If the tree suffers, the growth is slow and the rings are narrow. Sometimes we saw, eg, that the growth slowed down every ~20 years — maybe there was some sort of cyclic change in climate or other circumstances. Or sometimes we saw that some time ago the tree felt very well and grew nicely, but since some time it started dying.
