Jul 01, 2011: Crow: “Hey, look, I can even get some food from under water! I`m almost a sea bird!”

Seegull: (coming down on water near the Crow) “Hey, sea bird, how about swimming?”

Crow: (scowls and keeps silent)

Seagull: (scornfully) “Three time ha-ha! You crrow...” (flies away)

Crow: “Eh, indeed, whom I`m trying to cheat?” (goes out from water and proceeds through the shore)

Funny, but everything except the words was as above :). Well, now let`s go serious: looking for food near water is a normal behaviour for hooded crows. They say that a crow can take a bivalve from water and get the mollusc out of it. For that, the crow goes to the shore and either throws the shell from high altitude or beats it against a tree.

There is also an account of a case when a crow was looking after and oystercatcher taking freshwater mussels from water. When the ostercatcher could not open a too big mussel, it threw it and went away. Then the crow took the mussel and ate it.

This time we did not see the crow finding a shellfish, but there were lots of bivalve shell fragments on the shore. 2011-07-crow
