Some plants happen to seem like “how on earth can I make it happy???” first, but after some time, suddenly… they just start growing like grass. I had such stories with my first ivy in some 199x, in 2013 with Pellionia, in 2015 with Episcias, and Monanthes is among these stories, too. My mom brought it in 2013 ( a hard year for me — Max was born then). It was interesting but not very beautiful (top right photo).

As far as I remember, at those times I still thought that all succulents (except epiphytic cacti of Brazil, of course) are native to deserts, semi-deserts, dry forests and similar severe places. Monanthes automatically was added into the company of other succulents where it started to die — though slowly, trying to do its best to resist the tendency. By spring of 2015, it was only a small piece with four leaves.

By that time I had googled that the plant (at first I identified it as Monanthes polyphylla, but now I think it is muralis) is native to the Canary Islands. They are arid, too, and Sahara desert is rather close and sends hot, dry sirocco winds to the islands, but from the other side there are trade winds bringing humidity. There, on the rocks and cliffs of the islands, grow Monanthes plants. Of course, sea islands should have a softer and more humid climate than inland desert — some drops come from the sea, some rainfall; besides, rocks usually make partial shade for the plants growing around them. Monanthes moved to a humid nursery which I made for propagation of different succulents — leaf cuttings and other small pieces. Strange as it may seem, the tiny 4-leaved bit did not just fade (it wouldn't be a surprise for me) but started to grow! It grew and grew… I didn't move into the hothouse in summer any more; instead, I left it indoors. This winter, as I put new strong phytolamps into the nursery, I decided to leave the plant in warm nursery instead of moving to the cool wintering loggia. And… All of a sudden, it greeeew soooo big… o_o

To understand the size: pot is 13x10cm.
