Справочно: в природе этот вид фрайлей обитает на каменистых плешах в пампе. Это эндемик Риу-Гранди-ду-Сул — самого южного штата Бразилии; площадь ареала обитания вида меньше 5000 км2.

These are seedlings of 2015, it is their second winter. By the start of their second summer, they already were sort of beautiful and grew nicely through all the warm season. In December I started to mention that they became… smaller? Every time I looked at them, I thought: well, now they are tiny! Besides, the needles became so dense that I could not see if the cactus itself is alive under them. Well, gymnocalyciums have already shown me how they can deflate significantly, and one young lithops even demonstrated the trick of completely hiding under the ground… but those were bare enough so I could see if they are healthy or not.

By the start of January my curiosity bursted; I took the little ones to a warm place and woke them up. Top left photo shows them on Jan, 4. Bottom left photo shows them after 10 days. And by Jan, 21 they are growing actively (right photo). By the way, it appears that my worry was right: the smallest of the three stayed shrivelled forever.

For reference: in nature this species of fraileas grows on rocky outcrops and stony fields in pampa grasslands. It is endemic to Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and it has a small range, with an extent of occurrence of less than 5,000 km2.
