Если с русским названием вроде бы всё ясно, то латинское <em>Hippophae</em> вызывает вопрос: при чём тут лошади? Оказывается, в древности облепиховые веники давали лошадям, чтобы слегка откормить и улучшить внешний вид. Так что <em>hippo</em> лошадь + <em>phaos</em> сияние = то ли «сияющая лошадь», то ли «конский лоск». Забавно.</p><p>По-английски облепиха почему-то называется «морская крушина» (sea buckthorn), отсылая к латинскому <em>rhamnoides</em> (=крушиновидная), но объяснения, что общего между крушиной и облепихой, я не нашла. По-моему, они совсем не похожи.</p><p>Всякие популярные статьи на русском ещё называют облепиху «северным ананасом». Потому что якобы она его очень отдалённо напоминает. На вкус.
