Calendula is a diminutive of Latin calendae (first days of every month), but the cause for such name was lost and now etymologists only make assumptions. One thing is clear: Calendula and calendar have one root.

Calendula officinalis is probably native to southern Europe, though its long history of cultivation makes its precise origin unknown. Since ancient times pot marigold's petals were used in salads and as a food dye (and non-food dye as well). Culinary use also explains English common name “pot marigold”: the flowers were a common ingredient in German soups and stews. We keep pot marigolds for medicinal use — it has been used in folk medicine for centuries; nowadays you can find a lot about Calendula officinalis on PubMed.
