The Latin name of butterflies and moths, Lepidoptera, derived from Greek lepidos scale и pteron wing.

Bottom right: one of the common features of this family is long dense fringe framing each wing. The fringe is made of modified scales; I wonder if these fringes gave the family it's name — “gossamer-winged”.

I haven't found information about the purpose of this feature. It is believed that moths (active at night) need the fringes to fly noiselessly so that to be unseen on bats' radars. That does not explain gossamer-winged butterflies, as they fly at day. For those who are interested, here is a full-HD of this gossamer wing, with all scales and fringes (3761 x 2507, 1,67 M).
