Probably I would shoot the blues more often if I knew that “blue top, dotted bottom” is not one species but a couple of dozens species which look rather alike. For this reason I'm not sure that I ID'ed all blues correctly. This one looks like Amanda's blue for me.

blue's caterpillarLepidoptera.pro Gossamer-winged butterflies have interesting caterpillars (the photo on the left probably depicts a cranberry blue caterpillar). Unlike most other caterpillars, whose form is sausage-like, gossamer-winged offspring looks slipper-like (oval and flattened). Moreover, some of them are carnivorous, feeding on aphids. Others, which are herbivorous, compete with aphids for ants' protection: just like aphids, they are safeguarded and shepherded by ants in exchange for sweet excrements. The Amanda's blue is among the latter.

Some tropical Lycaenidae living on croton plants even learned to attract ants by “singing” (special vibrations). The ants and the croton have a symbiotic relationship: the plant gives food, the ants serve as guardians from other herbivorous insects. The caterpillars managed to jump into this harmony: in exchange for sweet reward they allow the caterpillars to eat the guarded plant. (from DeVries, Philip J.; "Singing Caterpillars, Ants and Symbiosis," Scientific American, 267:76, October 1992, source).

Finally, here is the strangest version of caterpillar-ant relationship: in some species, caterpillars “buy” favor of adult ants for the sweet excrements and then feed on ants' larvae.
