When I was a child, brimstones were very common in Chernogolovka. Now I have exactly one shot in 10 years. As it is often the first butterfly to be seen in the spring, sometimes as early as January when hibernating adults are awoken on a sunny day, there is a popular myth that it is this butterfly which gave us the word butterfly, a corruption of butter-colored fly.

Brimstone is one of the most long-living butterflies: adults live more than a year. Nevertheless, to reach such records, the butterfly has a special strategy: it flies for several days and then hibernates for several months; then again flies and again hibernation. To have so much hibernation, the butterfly mimics a buckthorn leaf; males look like yellow leaves and females — white leaves with a greenish tinge. Of, course, in winter it hibernates, too. Actually, I would not call that a long _life_... but rather a long sleep :).

Latin name means ~“anglewing of buckthorn”, it was given for the pointed tip of the front wing and because caterpillars feed on plants of buckthorn family (Greek gone angle + pteryx + Rhamnus is Latin name of buckthorn).
