Он входит в состав аминокислот и, соответственно, белков — т.е. ни один живой организм без азота не может жить и развиваться. В атмосфере азота навалом, больше, чем кислорода, но только тот азот так запросто к делу не пристроишь: связи между атомами в молекуле азота очень прочные. Поэтому большинство организмов получают азот поедая либо другие организмы, либо продукты их разложения в почве, и лишь азотфиксирующие бактерии в симбиозе с некоторыми растениями (бобовые, ольха) способны связывать атмосферный азот и делать его биодоступным. </p><p>Но на болоте высокая кислотность почв препятствует и разложению органики, и азотфиксации, образуется острый дефицит азота. И тут кровопийцы становятся важны. Они ищут кровь — источник азота и других питательных веществ, ведь только насосавшись крови самка сможет отложить яйца (некоторые комары способны откладывать яйца и без крови, но совсем чуть-чуть). Казалось бы, комар маленький — сам 2 мг, ещё 5 мг крови выпьет и притащит, подумаешь.  Но комаров много — в тундре, например, их общая биомасса превышает биомассу оленей. Так что комары и мошки — важное звено в цепочке переноса питательных веществ на болоте.</p><p>Кроме того, личинки комаров, слепней и мокрецов питаются детритом (органическими останками) и всем что попадётся, некоторые — хищничают. С учётом того, что личинок ещё больше, чем успешно вылупившихся кровососов — они, видимо, тоже играют большую роль в круговороте веществ. Ведь на болоте нет дождевых червей и многих других организмов, которые занимаются переработкой отмершей органики в лесу и на лугу. А тучи кровососов и их личинок становятся богатым источником пищи для птиц, лягушек, пауков и хищных насекомых.</p><p><span class=ubcl>сем. There are loads o f nitrogen in the atmosphere — more than of oxygen — but atmospheric nitrogen is not easily available, as chemical bonds between atoms in the nitrogen molecule are too strong. That's why most organisms get nitrogen by eating either other organisms or products of their decay.  Only nitrogen-fixing bacteria in symbiosis with some plants (legumes, alder trees) can fix the nitrogen from the atmosphere and make it bioavailable.</p><p>High acidity of the soils in the bog inhibits both organic matter decay and nitrogen fixation; thus there is a severe shortage of nitrogen. And here mosquitoes and other bloodsuckers get and important role. They are looking for blood as a source of nitrogen and other nutrients; only after sucking some blood the female will be able to lay eggs (some mosquitoes can lay eggs even without eating blood, but then it's very small amount). Mosquito is small (2&nbsp;mg), each mosquito can bring only 5&nbsp;mg of blood, looks like a negligible amount. But mosquitoes are numerous — for example, in tundra their aggregate biomass is larger than the aggregate biomass of reindeers. And so mosquitoes appear to be a very important part of the nutrient transfer process on the bog.</p><p>Besides, larvae of mosquitoes, horse-flies and midges feed on detritus (dead organic matter) and other small edible things; some are carnivorous. Taking into account their amount (even more then there are adult bloodsuckers) I can presume that there role in the nutrient cycles is important, too. There are no earthworms and other creatures which process dead organic matter in forests or meadows.
