Trichodiadema was the first among the indoor plants to bloom this year. There were only 5 flowers, but each of them kept for weeks, and the whole period of blooming was almost 2 months. Some sources mention that trichodiademas are reluctant to bloom in captivity. I'm a little bit proud ;).

The Latin names of the genus means ~“hairytrichos crowndiadema”: each leaf ends with a bunch of non-prickly bristles. I can presume that their main purpose is gathering water: in winter the plant considerably shrunk, but after I sprayed it with water (no watering for soil) all leaves became thick and smooth. That's logical: trichodiadema's native habitat (Cape province of South Africa) has annual rainfall of 200-220 mm, moreover, this plant dwells in cracks among stones, meaning that even this scarce water source for the plant disappears quickly,

Roots of Trichodiadema species have been used in the past for speeding the fermentation of bread, beer, etc. It is presumed they contain either yeast or sugars which increase the rate of fermentation. (yeast? in roots??? o_O) Googles gave me links to iQhilika — a mead which is still made nowadays in South Africa. It contains Trichodiadema's roots, pollen and some other ingredients.
