Nerium,

Willowherb flower

Fireweed can be distinguished from the close genus of willowherbs (Epilobium) by its unsymmetrical flowers. Still, some botanists attribute it to the willowherb genus.

Latin name Chamerion angustifolium can be translated as “dwarf oleander with narrow leaves”:

• Greek chamai “dwarf, small”, from this root derived chameleon (~“dwarf lion”, lol); Chamaedorea, Chamaerops and many other plants; and for real botanic nerds also chamaephyte,

• Greek nerion “rose bay (oleander)”: its official Latin botanical genus name is Nerium now,

• Latin angustus “narrow”, used widely in Latin names and is present in a number of European languages,

• Latin folium “leaf” — used in folic acid, portfolio, and in great number of other words.

In English:

• North American name fireweed was given bcs the plant is among the first to settle on burnt sites

• British rosebay willowherb: name “willowherb” was given, obviously, for the fact that the narrow leaves of both genera (Epilobium and Chamerion) resemble willow leaves.

And here again we see rose bay. The similarity with the rose bay (oleander) was not so obvious to me until I looked into my photoarchives to refresh the image of oleander in my memory. Indeed: the color and (well, remotely) form of flowers + narrow leaves + dense blossom + hairy seeds in long capsules… Yep, there is something alike. And, really, a rose bay bush in subtropical garden grows to the height of 1,5–2 men, and our northern “analogue” is only one man high, such a dwarf… :)
