Корни орхидей приспособлены к регулярному пересыханию. Обычные растения всасывают воду и раствор питательных веществ из почвы при помощи корневых волосков. Эпифитам такой способ не годится: дождь прошёл — вода кончилась, корневые волоски засохнут. Orchid roots are an adaptation to regular drying. Usual plants absorb water from soil using root hairs. This method is unsuitable for epiphytes: when the rain is over, the water runs away and the thin root hair would just dry up.
