В английском языке их ещё называют «паучьими орхидеями» (“spider orchids”) за очень длинные лепестки. Между прочим, это не просто так людям привиделось, это она специально. Самки ос, промышляющих охотой на пауков — <em>Pepsis</em> и <em>Campsomeris</em> — принимают растопыренные лепестки за добычу и нападают на цветки. Раз напала на цветочек — испачкалась в пыльце, два напала — испачкала в пыльце первого цветочка второй цветочек. PROFIT! Ну и что, что лепестков всего 6, а ног у пауков — 8… Они может без-2-ногих пауков-инвалидов изображают, я таких видела :).</p><p>Характерная растопыренность лепестков передаётся и многочисленным гибридам, выведенным орхидееводами от скрещивания брассий с другими родами орхидей. It is also called “spider orchid” because long petals and sepals have some resemblance of spider legs. <a target=_blank href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brassia>Brassia has a very specific method of pollination. It is carried out by female spider-hunter wasps of the genera <em>Pepsis</em> and <em>Campsomeris</em>. Mistaken by the mimicry of Brassia, the wasp stings the lip, while trying to grasp its prey without any success. By these movements the wasp comes into contact with the pollinarium, that then sticks to its head. By flying to another Brassia flower, this flower gets pollinated</a>. Never mind that there are just 6 petals while normal spiders have 8 legs… Suppose they mimic physically handicapped ones with 2 missing legs, I saw such samples in nature :).</p><p>This interesting form of petals and sepals is inherited by multiple Brassia intergeneric hybrids created by orchid breeders.
