Chironomus plumosus

Jun 14, 2011: Once riding along Dudergofskiy channel I heard lots of something very small bumping into my helmet. Very funny: the situation reminded me of fantastic stories I read in my childhood, where spaceships got into a flow of stones, knocking and bumping at ship's outer cover :D. Of course, in my case these were animals, not meteorites.

Chironomus plumosusAuthor: Josef Dvořák at biolib.czI failed to make a portrait of the insect, so here is one from the internet.

These a buzzer midges — insects close to mosquitoes, but they do not bite. Their name «buzzer» derives from the sound they make by flapping their wings with very high frequency. Midges' nymphs — bloodworms, sold in pet-shops as food for fish — eat detritus at the bottom of ponds and lakes. Adult midges do not eat at all, they only buzz and mate. In fact, they are among most harmless creatures on earth. That's why they have to be in swarms — harmless is short-living, thus there are no time for automonous walks. For people such swarm may look frightening. That's the power of collective! :)

Chironomus plumosusAuthor: Josef Dvořák at biolib.czThe most remarkable part of the midge are his antennae.
