род фаленопсис Phalaenopsis

To find stamens in the orchid`s flower, I had to search in the internet. I found out that orchid`s flower has only 3 petals — the two which are arranged like ears + complicated “lip” (labellum). The rest 3 nicely coloured leaves are sepals. And the stamens are located inside the “column” in the centre of the flower. To get the stamens with the pollen, you need to take the anther cap off the column`s end (maybe I will put a photo of it if Andrei will get it with his micro-photo-scope). And then you need to take these stamens to another flower and to put it into a special hole in the column. To make insects realize this algorithm (you cannot just explain them what to do in words, right?) orchids designed the lip — it`s a landing stage with special place were guests get their nectar. And the fascinating longevity of each flower (1-1 months) is intended for getting chances of the above-mentioned sequence high enough.

The word “phalaenopsis” (often called “phal” in common speech, both in Russian and in English) derived from Phalaena (name given by C.Linnaeus to a group of large moths) + opsis (“looking-alike”). Thus, Phalaenopsis means “looking like a butterfly”, which corresponds to English common name of this flower “Moth flower”. Afak, phal is one of the most easy-to-grow orchids.
