19.02.2011: Изучение литературы помогло прояснить ситуацию. Оказывается, крохали очень рано прилетают с юга, а пух у них не хуже гагачьего, так что не мёрзнут. Некоторые северные народы из крохалей даже тёплую одежду шьют.

Конечно, есть вероятность, что крохали зазимовали прямо тут, но я много раз за зиму ходила через этот мост — крохалей не было. Так что я лучше поверю в приближение весны. Тем более, что на днях The Telegraph показал, что где-то далеко на юге уже собираются в стаи наши журавли, чтобы лететь домой, на север. Если наша весна ещё не в пути, то она как минимум уже сидит на чемоданах! :)

Кстати, размером крохаль побольше обычной кряквы. Почему же такое название, если он явно не кроха? Оказывается, раньше он был не крохАль, а крОхаль (есть ещё вариант «керкуль»), от слов «крокать, каркать, кряхтеть»… Т.е. название говорит не о размере, а о том, что самки крохаля издают хриплое карканье.

Feb 19, 2011: After some reading I discovered that mergansers are early returners from their migrations. Their down is as warm as eiderdown, thus frost is not a big problem for them. Some northern nations even make warm clothes from mergansers` skins.

Of course, there is some possibility that these mergansers stayed here for the whole winter, but I passed this bridge many times and never saw them. So, I prefer to believe that the spring is approaching. Besides The Telegraph recently shown that somewhere far in the south the cranes are flocking together as they are soon going home, northwards. Even if the spring is not on the move, at least it`s already packed and ready to go! :)

Btw, what does “merganser” mean? It`s Latin mergus “waterfowl, diver” (deriving from mergere “to dip, immerse”) + Latin anser “goose”.
